Gardena (Calif.) Serra quarterback and Texas commit Maalik Murphy was one of the standouts at the recent Steve Clarkson QB Retreat.

We’ve been watching Murphy throw at the annual Steve Clarkson Retreat over Memorial Day weekend since he was in 7th grade. Once again, his big arm drew a ton of praise and he won the long ball competition on Sunday with a throw of 79 yards.

This was our evaluation of Murphy following the camp:

"Murphy has been a staple at these camps since middle school and just like he did three years ago, won the long ball competition with a throw of 79 yards. Size and arm strength are Murphy's biggest assets and he can put the ball on a rope just about anywhere he wants. He's a pocket quarterback who has improved his ability to throw on the run and he has worked hard to develop the rest of his game in terms of improving his overall quickness and throwing under duress."

Murphy had an up and down junior season in what was a short five game spring season but the hope is with a full off-season to train, he'll have a breakout senior season. The talent has always been there and it's just a matter of getting it done with the pads on.

Murphy committed to the Longhorns back in mid-February and has been a very active recruiter ever since. We caught up with him over the weekend at The QB Retreat (see video above) and Murphy talked about why he chose the Horns, his recent unofficial visit and gave us a few names of players he's targeting to join him in Austin.
