After a long 12 months, former Ohio State transfer quarterback Quinn Ewers has officially returned home to Texas.

Ewers journey to joining the Longhorns was far from an ordinary situation. A former five-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, Ewers committed to Texas in the summer of 2020 before flipping his pledge to Ohio State, reclassifying to the 2021 recruiting class and joined the Buckeyes last summer ahead of his true freshman season.

Ewers saw action in two games during his season-long stint in Columbus, but decided to take his talents elsewhere and entered the transfer portal in early December. The Longhorns immediately entered the mix to land the coveted transfer quarterback and Steve Sarkisian and his staff successfully pulled it off when Ewers signed with the Longhorns during the December signing period and moved in to campus Thursday.

Ewers' return to his home state to play for his childhood favorite team was a huge win for Sarkisian after the head coach made it clear the starting quarterback job was open for the taking following the 2021 season. As an early enrollee, Ewers will battle with fellow Texas QBs — redshirt sophomore Hudson Card, true freshman early enrollee Maalik Murphy and redshirt freshman Charles Wright — for the starting role when the Longhorns begin spring football in March.

"Well, it's big. It was a different recruitment obviously for Quinn," Sarkisian said of Ewers after he signed with Texas during the early signing period last month. "I had recruited him at the past place I was at. Obviously, he had been committed here before. He reclassifies and goes early to Ohio State and it's just amazing how everything kind of comes full circle for him and for us.

"He's a heck of a player. He’s a heck of a talent. I think there's a big sigh of relief for him. I think this is where he kind of wanted to be.

"Now we start the process of the development of him in our system and with the players around him and see how far we can take it."

Ewers joins fellow former Buckeye, cornerback Ryan Watts, as the two transfer signees who have enrolled early for the spring semester at Texas. In addition to Ewers and Watts, Texas also welcomed 10 high school signees to campus this week — four-star cornerback Terrance Brooks, four-star safety Bryan Allen Jr., four-star defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe, four-star defensive lineman Justice Finkley, four-star cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau, four-star quarterback Maalik Murphy, four-star running back Jaydon Blue, four-star safety Larry Turner-Gooden, four-star offensive lineman Cole Hutson and four-star defensive lineman Aaron Bryant — as the group prepares to officially begin their college careers as early enrollees.
