DENTON, Texas – The North Texas women's basketball team picked up its first Conference USA win this season over Marshall, 64-54. It snapped the Mean Green's three-game losing streak with everyone contributing a great deal to the victory.

Marshall came out firing in the first quarter with a 5-0 run but UNT's defense was the difference the rest of the way. The Mean Green dominated the boards in the first half like we saw them do in November and December. Every time the Thundering Herd scored, Jazion Jackson had an answer with back breaking 3-pointers and tough takes to the tin. Jackson finished with a game-high 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

A mix of man-to-man defense, zone, and press was the key to holding one of the most prolific scorers in college basketball at bay. The C-USA leader in points per game, Savannah Wheeler, couldn't get it going and she was held to 15 points on 16 shots. Five of which came from the charity stripe.

UNT handed Marshall its first loss in conference with a balanced effort across the board. Every North Texas student-athlete that played etched their name into the stat sheet on Thursday night. Jaylen Mallard finished with nine points on four-of-eight shooting from the floor. Madison Townley and Emma Villas-Gomis both notched six points apiece.

Quincy Noble continues to fill it up from anywhere on the floor. She registered double figures for the 11th time this season. UNT improved to 7-5 (1-1) and in all seven wins this season the Mean Green have registered at least 38 boards. This game will prove as a steppingstone to contend for the C-USA title in March.

North Texas will finish its first C-USA homestand when they host Western Kentucky on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (CT) in the Super Pit.

QUOTING HEAD COACH JALIE MITCHELL
"It felt good to get back into the win column. After the last month that we've had, all the ups and downs it was good to pull one out. I'm proud of our team and how determined we were from the jump. We had great practices this week and you can just tell that we wanted to get to this point. It was great to watch them compete for forty minutes like they did."
