ABILENE, Texas — The 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment shows that Taylor County has a higher percentage of suicides than Texas and the United States.

One Abilene homeless man battles with thoughts.

"PTSD, stress, depression, and nightmares," said Isaiah, who didn't share his last name.

IsaiahIsaiah, 25, has struggled for years after the death of his parents.

He attended Cooper High School but dropped out.

Writing poetry is a pastime that helps the young man deal with thoughts.

Isaiah said he's had thoughts of taking his life own life.

"Even from the lowest of the low, everyone's word is always important to hear," he said.

The assessment breaks down that the rural area of Texas has an alarming number of deaths by suicides.

Suicides are more likely to occur in Texas’ non-metro areas, and Taylor County’ s rural element may account for its high rate of suicides

Many of those struggling with mental illness like Isaiah will turn to drugs to help.

"I do things to self-medicate," he shared.

Isiah has a love for the arts. When he spoke about his art teacher from Cooper he would smile.

People living in Taylor County use prescription drugs for depression at the same rate (6.3%) as the national average, and a lower rate than the Texas average (7.0%), according to the data.

Texas has one of the lowest opioid overdose death rates in the country.

Taylor County is still faced with increasing substance use issues.

Isaiah said he's tried many times to get help, but he's never been able to complete a program.
