As of 11:59 p.m. on May 25, any bill that did not advance out of the Texas House was officially dead — at least for the 2021 session.

Included in that graveyard of legislation was an anti-transgender bill that would force children to play on the sports team of their gender at birth. Human rights and LGBTQ activists gathered in the rotunda at the stroke of midnight to cheer SB 29, which never advanced out of the house and was officially marked DOA.

Then, this morning, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick stepped in, asking the governor to call a June special session of the Texas Legislature, which ends on May 31.

Asking @GregAbbott_TX to call a June #SpecialSession today to pass #SB29 to save girls sports, #SB10 to end taxpayer funded lobbying and #SB12 to stop social media censorship. The TxHouse killed these conservative bills that majority of Texans in both parties support. #txlege

While it's not rare for Texas's lieutenant governor to call for a special session, it's usually for more pressing matters, such as passing legislation to keep Texas's infrastructure grid from failing and killing more Texans the next time a winter storm hits. But alas, the Republican lawmaker is prioritizing "social media censorship" over addressing the costliest storm in the state's history.

Though there are some pundits who believe Patrick might use a special session to actually address the storm, including The Quorum Report editor Scott Braddock who tweeted that, at least anecdotally, Winter Storm Uri has been a bigger issue for Patrick than Gov. Greg Abbott.

Candidly: The winter storm has been a much bigger priority for @DanPatrick than @GregAbbott_TX #txlege https://t.co/pAvIlmQHuF

Reaction from the left was swift, with Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Mike Collier taking the most Texas of Texas swings at Patrick:

"Today, we see Dan Patrick once again attempting to use the Texas legislature as a rubber stamp for his own right-wing agenda instead of working to address the concerns of Texans across the state. As always, he’s all hat and no cattle."
